What is VPS?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is one of the latest evolutions in the world of hosting. A VPS gives a user all the benefits of having their own dedicated server, without the hefty monthly bill. If you have a growing website, or simply need more server power and reliability, a VPS might be right for you.

The VPS is a technology platform that allows a hosting provider to partition a single server into multiple “virtual” machines, all linked on an individual basis to the Internet backbone connection.
Like a shared solution, the cost of hardware and software is distributed across all clients who share the services, but unlikely shared hosting, in VPS, their number is very small. Distribution of the cost among few clients enables small businesses to take advantage of dedicated functionality for about the same monthly cost as a high-end shared solution.

Virtual Private Server hosting can be considered a smart option between shared web hosting, and a dedicated server. It is more than a shared server and less than a dedicated server. If a shared hosting account is not enough, and a dedicated server is too powerful or costly, then a Virtual Private Server (VPS) may be right for you.

A VPS simply put is, a server that runs inside another server. Each VPS looks, feels, and acts like a dedicated server but shares the same hardware.

When to switch from Shared Hosting to VPS Hosting?

The question of when should somebody switch from a Shared Hosting account to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) is one that is asked time and time again.

Virtual private servers are the ideal choice for many who require more than what a shared hosting account has to offer, but do not have the budget for a dedicated server.

If you are one of these customers, then this stepping stone solution is ideal for you.

What is better in VPS in comparison to my Shared Hosting Package?

Unlike shared hosting, a VPS is a separate partition on a server – not just a directory. Consequently, a VPS solution has the following advantages over virtual or shared hosting:
* Only the hardware is controlled by the hosting company, so you can install and run your own applications.
* Software can be configured and customized by you (Virtual root access is available).
* You will never have to share the same space with other customers = more Security.
* Your site and applications are isolated to eliminate the risk of downtime due to others mistakes, attacks/hacks or faulty scripts.
* FTP and POP access are not shared.

What a basic VPS contains?

The VPS package is like a blank canvas. The only programs that come pre-installed and set up on the VPS packages are:
– The Operating System
– Anything included with a basic install of that Operating System
– The web server for that Operating System (e.g. Apache on Linux, IIS on Windows)

The Plesk control panel (optional) will include PHP and MySQL but any non-Plesk VPS will not include any extra applications such as PHP, MySQL, or MSSQL. These can be installed by you and configured, if you need them.
